In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized version circulated by official channels that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a tailor-made persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series launched last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the implication is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this identical story rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The position was effectively a casting call with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country de facto.

• His list included various figures, among them a reformer later murdered and a security service director.
• According to an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: loyal, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman close to the events stated the primary requirement was controllability and loyalty, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. In essence, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
