Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Links as '100%' Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh talk connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, responded to the persistent speculation about his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Strain After Previous Remarks
Maresca's most recent comments come after he referred to a previous 48-hour period as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial words had sparked considerable speculation of a possible disagreement between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club next season and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca revealed that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has also been no apology offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's press conferences has become notably strained, leading to fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent beginning to the season.
Chelsea's on-field situation is positive: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a favourable European draw with good performances in their remaining games.
The lingering question is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might begin to affect a team that was just starting to appear settled.
