Democratic legislators who urged US troops to ignore illegal commands are now reacting to what they describe as a government investigation into their actions.

Democrat Legislator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday notified the six congressional members who were featured in recent recording about the investigation.

"No amount of intimidation or harassment will ever prevent us from doing our jobs and upholding our founding document," four Congressional representatives declared.

Their statement to military members prompted President Trump to accuse the Democrats of "treasonous conduct, carrying capital punishment" and triggered a Pentagon review of "significant claims of improper behavior" against Democrat Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, who also participated in the video.

The video by Democratic officials, each of whom have served in the military or intelligence community, was shared last week by the Michigan senator and features Senator Kelly and US Representatives Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan and Jason Crow.

The communication came amid escalating tensions between the current administration and the Venezuelan government, as well as Democrat-led municipalities opposing Trump's deployment of state military forces to the area.

The recording - in which the Arizona senator accused the administration of "setting our armed forces and security personnel against American citizens" - drew Trump's ire and he suggested on social media that they be arrested, imprisoned and hanged.
