Her Royal Highness's Traditional Christmas Carol Concert Honours Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The sizable congregation will hear a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
Focusing on Compassion and Love
The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a terminally ill child.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
A Steady Comeback
The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Musical Talent and Access
Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
