Honoring my wife's memory this first Christmas by finding joy with our boys

A poignant conversation between Andrew and his wife Zoë, occurring shortly before her sudden death, is one he returns to often. They were driving to visit a friend when the 38-year-old mother of their two young sons expressed that "she had everything she ever wanted in life".

Now, six months after losing his "kind, caring, clever and beautiful" partner to sudden adult death syndrome, he finds solace in remembering that "heart-to-heart in the car".

A 42-year-old mechanical engineer working in nuclear power, Andrew notes they were both fully engaged in the busyness of "everyday life".

In the family house, filled with memories, playthings, and feline companions, he believes we rarely tell our dear ones how much they truly mean. "It's easy to assume their presence," he reflects. "You can reach out and hold them. But verbally expressing your gratitude or admiration happens far too seldom."

Confronting a Solo Christmas

This inaugural holiday season alone, for Andrew, underscores our collective inability to converse about grief and contemplate life's hardest realities. Often, individuals are at a loss regarding how to behave or best assist a person grieving the loss of their life partner.

He acknowledges his past self was "not good at handling grief - I'd be the one to hide and not approach".

No symptoms suggested Zoë, a successful lawyer, was unwell before the unexpected heart failure that claimed her life.

{Having endured such a traumatic loss, Andrew has contemplated what truly helps. From his experience, he suggests that "simply recognising their sorrow and offering your presence is sufficient." "Don't ask what you can do - just do something," he says. "Because I don't know what I want or need. I just need people to act."

{He gives examples like bringing food without being asked. "It doesn't matter if I eat it or not – you've given me the choice without burdening me with a decision."

The Overwhelming Responsibility of Solo Parenthood

{If a bereaved person doesn't respond immediately, he says not to be surprised. In the early days, messages flooded in. "And if you were the last text I read at night, that person received a raw, grief-filled summary of my day."

He mentions that literature on widowerhood, like certain insightful books, can offer valuable perspective on the new reality of raising children alone.

His overwhelming burden and sorrow are clear when talking about his cherished children, four-year-old Joey and toddler Tommy.

{"I'm not just their dad anymore - I'm their parent," Andrew explains. "My role has fundamentally changed." "I really liked being Dad. But I can't be the dad that I was - I have to be this. I have to assume some of her roles."

Enduring Initial Milestones Alone

Widows and widowers commonly reference the acute pain associated with navigating inaugural celebrations without their loved one.

His plans included his spouse's birthday celebration and the wonderful mayhem of the holiday season with their boys.

Their meeting was serendipitous in autumn 2014 when both separately signed up for a bicycle holiday across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. He remembers his immediate impression: "She was absolutely amazing!"

"On a bike tour," he reflects, "your focus is forward, allowing for deep conversation, and we instantly clicked."

Convinced they were meant to be, Andrew soon relocated from the Middle East to Manchester to be with Zoë. {"It's what you dream of," he says. "A person who understands, believes in, accepts, and loves you unconditionally."

Following cohabitation, they wed in spring 2017, living what he describes as "an ideal existence". Post difficulties with natural conception and IVF, they welcomed their first boy in 2021 and their second little brother two years later.

An Obligation Without Alternative

A significant part of his Christmas will be dedicated to the mundane yet vital routine of potty-training his little boy.

{He reflects on the common but sometimes unhelpful advice to "be strong". {"You do have a choice but you don't have a choice," he states. "I feel a level of expectation from her - to honour her memory by being the best parent I can be."

"I aim to minimise the effect of her absence on their lives, allowing their true selves to flourish. {This is a struggle," he admits, "as successful parenting might obscure her role, yet poor parenting would dishonour her memory."

Living Without an Emotional Anchor

Back at his job just eight weeks after his loss, he has a newfound appreciation for his past privileges and the immense workload his incredible wife handled. {Time, he says, is now his most precious and scarce resource. "That foundational support system is simply gone," he notes.

{Using a football analogy, the avid runner says: "It's like playing a man down in a match; you must compensate with greater effort. Their happiness is contingent on my ability to embrace life once more."

He calls her his "emotional anchor that provided completeness - without her, I feel fragmented. That depth is love, and the source of such pain."

{The Christmas season accentuates this pain, especially when seeing couples hand-in-hand while shopping. {"I'm trying to wrap presents - I hate wrapping presents," he shares, a task that always fell to Zoë while he distracted the children. "Now, I haven't got 'me' to distract the kids."

{Juggling childcare, work, and grief leaves little room for processing emotions. {"The bit I struggle with is time. You don't have space or time to grieve," he confesses. "My greatest challenge is finding moments for reflection. Solitude is frightening, as it forces confrontation with her memory. I carry her with me, yet that mental companionship underscores the tangible loss."

{When asked what Zoë would want for him now, he eventually replies: "It's horrible, but she's not here to live anymore. It's silly for me not to live 'cos she can't. She would want me to live. I can't put it any other way."

His method of honoring her memory this holiday season, and forever, lies in fostering happiness for his sons and seeking pockets of light.
