Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the morning session finished without tangible results, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Talks
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can relax again. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to conclude in return for the freedom of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the gathering, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and locality areas and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area said two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, medical staff said.
