Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
