McLaren Points Finger at Competitors for Team-Mate Crash

Tire detaches from McLaren after impact between team drivers

One tire flies off the car of Norris after he collided with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

McLaren F1 team bosses Brown and Andrea Stella attributed opposing racers for the incident between Piastri and Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

The Australian driver, leading Norris in the standings by 22 points, bounced into his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.

The collision forced out both team drivers from the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "inexperienced", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg made contact with Piastri and he had no business being where he was."

The team boss Andrea Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we didn't have the opportunity to race."

"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of experience fail to act with necessary care. Enter the first corner, ensure you avoid harming other drivers and continue."

The team clarified that Stella was referring to both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Contrasting Views on the Crash

However, former champion Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

Piastri had a better start than Norris and at first competed on the outer side on the uphill entry to the turn.

However he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on Norris on the exit, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Racer Comments After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both very far from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."

His teammate said: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us things happened and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outside changing direction and then I was there in the center."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the strong performance from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and way out of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso attack on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Oscar turned in and the contact was inevitable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

The team will analyze the crash with their drivers but not until the event weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on Saturday.

The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"Our team holds a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."

"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more prudence would be good for everyone."

Championship Implications

The race was taken by the Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the numbers says - we lost eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two strong drivers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was taking the championship one event at a time.
