The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
