New Year's Partygoers Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Predicted Across the UK
Weather experts are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies
Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be cold, making additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.
Temperatures Expected to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Warnings Activated
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
