Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Criticism
Personalities from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
A number of Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
