Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
