On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city recorded an air quality index above 500, which represents 10x the healthy limit established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than safe levels.

Firecracker Ban and New Developments

For the past four years, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that covers the metropolis as winter begins.

Nevertheless recently, the newly elected local administration appealed to the judicial authority to propose a modification of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Decision and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific periods throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Several recording stations throughout the city recorded pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe measurements recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants originating in across the border following the events.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been found to spike to 70% higher the most severe records ever documented in Beijing, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature fatalities per year in the capital.
