UK Sport Chair Outlines Artificial Intelligence Plan to Boost Great Britain Athletes For Future Medal Success.
Great Britain's Olympic and Paralympic Games squads need to embrace artificial intelligence and encourage greater collaboration to sustain their recent elite performance, as stated by UK Sport leader Nick Webborn.
"We have been a highly prosperous nation, and to keep that standing or to possibly improve further, we're going to have to do things differently," he stated.
He emphasized the importance to "think smarter" and "utilize things like AI appropriately in sport," alongside improving partnerships between different governing organizations.
Utilizing Technology for Performance
Webborn's vision goes further than medal targets. He highlighted several crucial fields where AI could provide significant benefits:
- Talent Identification: Employing analytics to discover promising competitors.
- Injury Prevention: Forecasting and minimizing injury hazards through movement monitoring.
- Remote Classification: Enabling equitable classification for Paralympic athletes without travel.
This follows a previous announcement that British competitors would be given AI-based safeguards against online abuse.
Reviewing Recent Games Performance
Although Team GB secured 65 podium finishes at the 2024 Paris Games, equalling their London 2012 haul, their first-place tally of 14 saw them fall to 7th in the final table.
"We want to continue exceeding expectations," commented Webborn. "The focus is on those little details, how we turn those second places into gold."
He also commended the Paralympic squad, which has consistently finished runner-up behind China, but observing that international rivals are improving rapidly.
Competitor Well-being as a Foundation
During his first discussion after assuming the position, Webborn placed significant importance on competitor welfare and post-career development.
"Supporting the athletes who come into our high-performance program... preparing for their future, so that the abilities they acquire help them become a better person... remains critically vital to me," Webborn stated.
He argued that a supportive environment not only creates superior athletes but also better people for the long term.
Future Aspirations and Staging Major Events
For the future, the agency is focused on bringing world-class competitions to the UK. Confirmed events feature the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
The chairman further voiced a future "aspiration" to host the Summer Games again, potentially around 2040.
"Wasn't that incredible in 2012? I'd like for more people of the public to have similar moments too," he reflected.
He mentioned that a future bid could be creative, perhaps involving multiple host cities such as Liverpool and Manchester working together.
