In the wake of the passing of Diane Keaton at age 79, Woody Allen has released a lengthy tribute celebrating her career and their profound relationship.

In a newly released essay, the filmmaker, 89, detailed their shared experiences from their first introduction in 1969 amid rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, spanning their multi-year relationship and the multiple projects they collaborated on.

“With the passage of time, I created films for an sole critic, Keaton herself,” he wrote. “I avoided reading a press commentary of my work and cared only with what she had to say about it.”

He also mentioned that she was “unique among people the world has seen or is unlikely to ever witness once more,” and that “her smile and laughter brightened any environment she walked into.”

Surprising Loss and Enduring Memories

The actress died after taking ill at her home in Los Angeles. She had been less visible for some months, and a confidant indicated that although no ailment had been announced, her health had declined swiftly, with many of her close friends in the dark that she was suffering.

Her death nonetheless seemed to be a shock even to her inner circle.

“A few days ago, the world was a place that contained Keaton,” writes the director. “Now it’s a world that is without her. Thus, it’s a darker world. Still, there are her films. And her wonderful chuckle still resonates in my head.”

The actress continued to be a loyal defender of Allen after the revival of a accusation made in 1992 leveled at him by his adopted daughter throughout a custody battle.

The accusation was investigated at length and then dropped by investigative agencies, and no charges were filed.
